After almost two years of providing sponsorship to Our Place Society with 800 lbs of pet food per month we decided it was time to change. We needed a partner who would go even further on its understanding of how important animals are to those individuals who have lost everything in life and who live on the streets.
A man or a woman who for a sad and uncomprehensible reason have lost all they had deserve 100% of our compassion and open mind.
* Who are we to judge others when some days we do not even understand ourselves?
* How can somebody who did not have a 6 ft tall father who kicked the entire family with his feet and hands and sometimes chased his wife with a knife can understand such feeling of fear and despair in a child's heart?
* How can somebody who did not see his parents drunk while he/she was hungry or getting raped by other members of the family can understand the child's lack of self-esteem?
All these different situations and scenerios are the ones discussed in our society's meeting table. Humility, humbleness, compassion, and undertanding are like the 10 committments to our board members and volunteers. Our empathy and determined will to go an extra mile to help the owner of a pet in need is just because we know that most of the times the pet represents the only family a person has. This dog or cat needs to be allowed in emergency shelters, or at least the owner of the animal needs to know that a protected area with a warm dog house is available for his/her animal during the night or during eating times.
Therefore, in September, 2014, we found the society which thinks like we do; the Victoria Cool Aid Society allows their residents to be accompanied by their pets. They are a pet friendly shelter and each night they serve up to 120 individuals experiencing homelessness. In addition, they have many more drop in clients each day searching for connection with essential services like donations and showers. Our parternship was a perfect match because before our arrival they were already contacting other animal rescue groups asking for donations or suggestion where they could find a reliable source of pet food for their beneficiaries. It was meant to be, we can call it Law of Attraction.
How can you help? The things we need the most are: dog and cat kibble or/and cans, raincoats, flea medication, de-worming, medical attention when we cannot afford it, and dog backpacks. We also need gas gift certificates due to our constant food pick-ups and deliveries. We also collect all kinds of left-over medication that people may have from their pets. In our Contact Us page you will find all the instruction where you can drop things off, or how to contact us for pick-ups.
The Saanichton Veterinary Hospital accepts donations in our behalf for the spay and neuter of dogs belonging to citizens experiencing homelessness.
